Decay is an immediate response to the ongoing triple catastrophe that has hit Japan - the magnitude 9.0 earthquake, the tsunami, and the Fukushima nuclear emergency. On April 1, 2011, at Montreal's Society for Arts and Technology, a seven-hour artistic vigil will be held in solidarity with the people of Japan, and with their families and friends worldwide. 手向け TAMUKE Offrandes pour le Japon / Offerings for Japan invites Montrealers to celebrate in music, poetry, images and ideas the resilience of the Japanese people, who, with thousands of lives lost, so many more displaced, and ecosystems in turmoil, continue to give the world so much beauty, so much strength - and so much hope.
The event is designed to show solidarity with the people of Japan; to provide a sanctuary for local artists and non- artists who have been touched by the crisis; and to establish a platform for artistic reflections on what this catastrophe means for humankind. We also hope to raise awareness of how the world is indebted to Japan for its great contributions to the arts, including its profound expressions of the beauty and ferocity of nature.
During the event, dozens of Montreal musicians, poets, dancers and other artists, Japanese or otherwise, will recite, improvise, present, and explore a wide range of emotions and ideas on themes of Disorder and Sanctuary.
